The Ashes – Cricket is sport that music fans are allowed to like

Ashes 300x167 The Ashes Cricket is sport that music fans are allowed to like

With the Ashes in full flow there is the rare chance for music fans to pay attention to what happens in sport without fear of lowering themselves to sports buffs.
Music and sport are nemeses who should never meet. The rivalry starts at school when the townies chase balls on frozen fields while leather jacket wearing hipsters talk about Joy Division and lean against walls. Any teen movie tells you the outsider indie kids always trump the jocks.
Sport hardly helps itself promote style and panache. Just look at soccer montages – the nouveau riche in shorts gurning to Kasabian, or tennis clips – the middle classes waving flags to Gabrielle Aplin or whatevs. Basically, they prove sport generally sucks and is without soul.view more

doctor 4 final 300x222 Q&A interview with ‘Doctor Who’ star Frazer Hines

Neela Debnath spoke to ‘Doctor Who’ actor Frazer Hines, who played companion Jamie McCrimmon to Patrick Troughton’s second incarnation of the Time Lord.
Why do you think Doctor Who has remained so popular?
It’s a job I did over 40 years ago but I never thought it would still be here all those years later. I don’t know what it is. Even when it was taken off the air, I think fans kept it going because they wanted to see more of it. It was the fandom and a company called Big Finish who did the audio books that kept the name Doctor Who alive. So I think it’s been knocking on the doors all the time, people would not let it go. Like a dog with a bone. The fans will not let it go.view more

Rett 300x193 Living with Rett Syndrome: Remembering birthdays past
Add caption

As my son’s third birthday approaches, I find myself thinking about Hannah’s third and how we celebrated. I struggle to recall and then realise why: her third birthday came five weeks after diagnosis and it’s all a bit of a blur. Not because we were so wholly devastated, back then, that life lost clarity: we didn’t know enough about Rett to know we should be devastated.
We cancelled the planned party because a close friend lost her baby at 15 weeks pregnant and a celebration felt wrong. But Rett Syndrome, whatever that was, just didn’t seem like a big enough reason to cancel a party. There were tears, of course, fears and questions, but ultimately only a tiny speck of dust, out of the vastness of the dust cloud that was about to engulf our lives, had landed.view more
