Band of Outsiders, Bon Appetit fete 'Saving the Season'

Band of Outsiders' creative director Scott Sternberg and Bon Appétit editor in chief Adam Rapoport hosted a dinner at downtown's Grand Central Market on Tuesday night in honor of style writer turned canning wunderkind Kevin West and his new book "Saving the Season: A Cook's Guide to Home Canning, Pickling, and Preserving."
Before the 100-person, Southern-flavored dinner, guests from the worlds of art, fashion and food including Doug Aitken, Liz Goldwyn, China Chow, Katherine Ross, Zoe Cassavetes, Bret Easton Ellis and Vogue's West Coast editor Lisa Love, milled about among bales of stratgically placed hay and drank cocktails and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer from canning jars.
As if that wasn't indication enough, the evening wasn't much on formalities, with Rapoport and Sternberg making only the briefest of remarks before the feast commenced. "I wanted to acknowledge this evening as a fusion of the worlds of fashion and food," said Sternberg, "that I don't think could happen anywhere else but Los Angeles."
Sternberg drew a parallel to West's career arc. “Over the years we've all seen this strange, interesting and wonderful juxtaposition between what he was -- which was the sort of guy who wrote about skewering socialites -- and what he is now -- which is a guy who spends all day skewering pickles."
With a roar of laughter from the guests, Sternberg and Rapoport took the opportunity to raise their canning jars in toast to West as bowls of pickled vegetables and platters of barbecued pork spare ribs and pork belly began to land on tables.
As West began to circulate among the guests, one of them remarked about his outfit -- a pair of dark denim jeans, a white, linen button-down shirt and a white, one-button notch lapel blazer, "Only you would wear white to a barbecue," they said.
Yes, it was just that kind of a crowd.
And if you happen to read this in time, West will be discussing the book and signing copies at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Skylight Books, 1818 N. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles.
Steve McQueen's tweed jacket up for bid
A tweed jacket worn by Steve McQueen in the 1968 film "Bullitt" will go up for auction on July 29, Profiles in History announced Wednesday.
While there certainly seems to be no shortage of fame-adjacent apparel on the auction block these days -- a negligee that once belonged to Monica Lewinsky and a pair of Levi's worn by Luke Skywalker are two recent examples -- this jacket occupies a special place in the pantheon of the male movie wardrobe.
That''s because the McQueen mythos looms large; I can't even begin to count the number of celebrities and menswear designers I've spoken to over the course of my career that namecheck the late actor when asked about style icons or fashion inspiration.
And because "Bullitt" is arguably McQueen's most influential movie, style-wise, even today the Internet is full of conversations that dissect every aspect of what's seen on screen from the car he drove in the big chase scene (a 1968 Mustang GT 390) to the watch he wore on his wrist (a Heuer).
Profiles in History's description of the jacket, which goes under the gavel at the end of next month, reads in part:
"This jacket is the brown herringbone tweed jacket, with suede elbow patches, that was custom made for Hollywood legend Steve McQueen ... McQueen wore this jacket throughout the second half of the film. McQueen wears this distinctive jacket while on the hitman’s trail, during the iconic car chase, while riding with Jacqueline Bisset in her yellow Porsche cabriolet in San Mateo, at the police station, in the Coroner’s office and the climactic chase on foot at San Francisco International Airport where 'Bullitt' finally kills the mobster and places this jacket over the dead body."
According to the auction house, the jacket was once on exhibit at the Warner Bros. studio museum, is fully authenticated by the seller and a letter of authenticity will be included with the lot.
Profiles in History estimates the jacket will fetch between $600,000 and $800,000 at the auction, which is scheduled for *Monday, July 29 in Los Angeles.
Though everyone knows you can't really put a price tag on that kind of cool.
Gay marriage rulings: Members of the plaintiff team Wednesday after the Supreme Court decisions
With the Supreme Court deciding two marriage equality cases Wednesday, and Twitter reaction coming fast and furious, I was interested to see how the fashion industry would respond.
The industry has been incredibly supportive of gay rights over the years. Isaac Mizrahi and Michael Kors recently married their same-sex partners, while Tom Ford, Christian Siriano and other designers have spoken out on the issue in interviews. Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour released a video stating her opinion that the right to marry is as fundamental as the right to vote.
And yet, American designers and brands have been largely quiet on Twitter on Wednesday morning. Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Diane von Furstenberg and others have not commented on the rulings.
Here are a few Tweets from designers and brands that have appeared in support of the decisions.
